Your course falls into six modules plus a final major project which lasts three months. Each module focuses on a different area of video game composition, while at the same time developing specific compositional, technical and business skills.
Students will be introduced to the concepts surrounding the purpose of game audio and the practical skill of creating audio in sync with a moving image. They will examine how it works in practice, technically, creatively and in the professional working environment. They will learn to create audio to a brief in a variety of styles, accurately interpreting the intentions of the game audio director.
They will explore the various roles within the game industry and learn who is responsible for each aspect of the game delivery. This module will also discuss game direction and management, storytelling and narrative, level design and game workflows. Specifically, the focus will be on handheld and mobile gaming.
Students are introduced to the art of spotting a cut scene, choosing when and where to place audio, and will be discussing in depth the role that sound plays.
Video game sound designers are expected to turn their hands to a variety of styles and genres but they are mostly expected to create sound that explores the unique interactive nature of the medium. The non-linear medium of video games presents exceptional challenges and opportunities.
This module includes:
- Gain an insight into game music and audio.
- Understand the foundations of working in the game industry.
- Go deeper by looking at moving image case studies
- Learn about game audio industry practices, challenges techniques and discussions on how the video game tackles dialogue differently to other mediums.

Frequently Asked Questions
For your portfolio, we would like to see examples of audio manipulation in some form. Ideally, these would be examples of sound design replacements you have done to video games or film clips. However we understand not everyone will have this in their portfolio if you are moving from a different discipline. We would encourage you to try replacing the sound effects from a video game cutscene or gameplay footage, but we will also accept:- Audio, music, and dialogue editing
- Mixing and mastering music (a ‘before and after’ is appreciated)
- Any audio to picture
- Field recording, and foley.
- Practical or musical sound design.
Feel free to reach out and show us your portfolio if you want to check if it's suitable. If you choose to do sound effect replacements, you are allowed to use sound libraries. Sound effects created and manipulated by you are encouraged, but using sound libraries is a key part of a sound designer's workflow so you can use these in your application. For those of you that have already worked in games, examples of your work, preferably as screen-captured video and audio, would be very helpful. It should be entirely your own work. You must make it clear in the covering letter where loops or any other pre-recorded audio that is not your own has been used. A list of sound libraries you have used to create your work is required.
