what to expect during taster week

Join live webinars from different degrees

Below is the current schedule for Taster Week. All times quoted are in either UTC or UTC+1 depending on the time of year. Please make sure to convert to your own time-zone. We may make amendments to this as we get closer to the start date, so do keep an eye on this (and the Postgraduate Taster Week course on your profile) for changes.

Throughout the week you'll be able to join live webinars on a wide range of topics – from music production to sound design. These are taken from our different degree courses. You can attend any webinar, no matter what degrees you are most interested in. You might be surprised at what you'll develop a taste for!

GET A TASTE OF COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND MODULES

Before the week even begins you'll have access to an assignment for each of our Masters programmes, along with supporting modules to help you with those assignments. Should you wish to have a go at an assignment, you can get feedback on your work in the group review sessions during the week.

get pro feedback on your music / audio, or JUST learn from others

You can join review sessions to get constructive feedback, practical advice, and encouragement on your music or sound design, or just learn from the feedback offered to others. If you want to submit some of your own work for feedback, you can either submit one of the assignments mentioned above (which will take priority), or any existing work in your portfolio. You'll need to submit work at least 24 hours in advance.

    Hosted by Guy Michelmore and Tim Johnson: Join a welcome session to learn more about Postgraduate Taster Week, how you can access our online campus, and how to make the most out of the week ahead.

  • 12PM BST: Releasing Your Music

    Hosted by Ella Walker and Chris Rockall: Join two music industry pros as they discuss how to release your music. From artwork and visual assets, to social media strategies, PR and working with streaming services, Ella and Chris bring their real world knowledge and experience of 30 years+ to answer your questions.

  • 5PM BST: Music Production and Songwriting: Review Session

    Hosted by Ella Walker and Chris Rockall: Join Ella and Chris as they listen to your tracks, whether you’re a singer-songwriter or producer, giving you industry level feedback and advice along with your peers.

  • 6PM BST: Welcome to Taster Week (Late Session)

    Hosted by Guy Michelmore and Tim Johnson: Join a welcome session to learn more about Postgraduate Taster Week, how you can access our online campus, and how to make the most out of the week ahead.

Tuesday

  • 2PM BST: Motivic Manipulation: Exploring Techniques to Get The Most From Your Motifs

    Hosted by Arhynn Descy and Emer Landers: We will explore different ways to change and adapt motifs as a means to extend a piece of music, create variation in your music or to create coherence over multiple cues (for example in a film score).

  • 3:30PM BST: Professional Media Composition: Review Session

    Hosted by Arhynn Descy and Emer Landers: Join Arhynn and Emer as they listen to your music. giving industry level feedback and advice along with your peers. This is for anyone considering a future in media composition.

  • 5PM BST: Heroic Harmonies: A deep dive into the music of Giacchino's "The Incredibles"

    Hosted by Norman Ludwin and Allison Piccioni: What makes a superhero score sound... super? In this session we will look at the harmonies and techniques used in the soundtrack of Disney's 'The Incredibles'.

  • 6:30PM BST: Orchestral Composition Review Session

    Hosted by Norman Ludwin and Allison Piccioni: Join seasoned orchestrators as they listens to your orchestral compositions, giving industry level feedback and advice along with your peers. This is for anyone looking to work better with orchestral instruments and ensembles.

Wednesday

  • 6PM BST: Making your first video game sound ambience

    Hosted by Giorgio Vezzini: The ambience and sound design of an environment is just as important as the game soundtrack when building a living, breathing world. In this webinar, Giorgio (Baldur's Gate 3) will break down what creating a game ambience looks like in practice and what choices you have as a sound design creative.

  • 7:30PM BST: Sound Design for Video Games: Review Session

    Hosted by Giorgio Vezzini: If you’re interested in creating sound design for games (foley, SFX etc), then submit a piece of your work for this session and we will review it live with our tutors and other Taster Week students.

Thursday

  • 7PM BST: Orchestrating and mixing a huge sound

    Hosted by Mike Worth and Joel Grant: There are many factors that contribute to creating a 'big sound' in your orchestral music, and to get it right you need to get both the arrangement and the mix right.

  • 8:30PM BST: Composing for Video Games Review Session

    Hosted by Mike Worth: Join games composers Mike Worth as he listens to your music. giving industry level feedback and advice along with your peers. This is for anyone considering a future in game music, which has notable differences than writing for linear media.

Friday

  • 6PM BST: Taster Week Assignment Review and Wrap-up

    Hosted by Guy Michelmore and Tim Johnson: During Taster Week, we provide you with a few examples of degree assignments and materials. If you tackled one of these projects, you can get feedback on it specifically in this session.
